There is debate in the scientific literature regarding which model best represents the female sexual response and what constitutes female sexual dysfunction (FSD; Sand & Fisher, 2007; Segraves, Balon, & Clayton, 2007). Much of the research conducted in this area works within the framework of the American Psychiatric Association (APA, 2000) and International Classification of Diseases (World Health Organization, 2000) definitions of FSD, which draw on the sexual response model proposed by Masters and Johnson (1966), expanded on by Kaplan (1974), then modified by Robinson (1976). In the 1960s, Masters and Johnson (1966) described the sexual response of men and women as a progression of phases: excitation; plateau; orgasm; and, finally, resolution. In the 1970s, Kaplan (1974) noted that this model overlooked the phase that initiated sexual activity: sexual desire. In addition, Robinson (1976) argued that the plateau phase was actually the final stage of the excitation phase. In the revised model (henceforth referred to as the modified linear model), the sexual response commences with spontaneous sexual desire. Desire is followed by arousal, which may then lead to orgasm and resolution. This model suggests that under normal circumstances, the stages of the female sexual response proceed in direct linear fashion, one stage preceding the next, mirroring the male sexual response.
