Description

My 80,000+ word non–fiction book, “City Boy” is an auto-biography based on compelling stories and events taken from my extraordinary life. While Baby Boomers will identify with the time and place, I think anyone that has grown up fascinated by the American free spirit- think Twain’s Huckleberry Finn and the tales of Jack Kerouac-will relate to these tales of youth, freedom and adventure. With a splash of Neil Simon’s humor, I take readers on a tale of skipping school with the boys, committing petty crimes, peeking in bedroom key holes, smoking pot during the Vietnam Era, hanging around the pool halls on the Avenue, drag racing hot cars down the street, hitchhiking to far off places and making the occasional trip to a jail house. Some of these adventures are typical, some of them are atypical- but they are never boring.
At 12 years old, Gregory Alverez, is smart but uncommitted, active and always in search of a good time. We start this adventure in a typical Midwestern American city in the late 1960s. Father gone, Mother at work, Greg is on his own for most of the day. Along with his buddies, Greg finds himself free to wander and explore the world around him. At first, with no real responsibilities, Greg has the time and the curiosity to find and to cause trouble. Later with no formal education, but with a love of books he has educated himself enough to garner a career in the field of design and engineering. Follow Greg as he moves through highway adventures, love and heart ache, jobs and marriage all while dealing with the many temptations that surround him at all times. Fun, off beat and told with no apologies, Greg grows older, wiser and relates events in an “I can’t believe this is happening to me” sort of manner, as if he too is just as amazed or shocked by situations that he finds himself in, as the reader might be.
Intertwined throughout the story are honest and explicit renderings of encounters Greg has with friends, family members and the many women that he meets or knows. Open, honest, and sexual, this story leaves very little to the imagination. Every relationship that Greg has with those around him, emotional or otherwise, is laid bare with a raw reality and is shown and discussed in the cold light of the day.
